Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of L-theanine on attention and reaction time in healthy university students, particularly focusing on individuals with high anxiety levels.
Methods: Eighteen university students participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants consumed either 200 mg of L-theanine dissolved in 100 ml of water or a placebo of 100 ml water. The study employed a repeated-measure design, assessing participants 15–60 minutes post-consumption using visual and auditory attention tasks.
Results: L-theanine intake significantly enhanced visual attention and reaction time in participants with high anxiety, as evidenced by improved performance on attention tasks and reduced heart rate. Conversely, no significant effects were observed in the low anxiety group.
